Resolution to support a ban on assault rifles:

Resolution presented to the Lewiston Democratic Committee, March 14, 2018

WHEREAS the unrestricted proliferation of military-grade weapons, including the AR-15 and similar assault rifles, constitutes a grave danger to American society;

WHEREAS these weapons have no other legitimate use than for military operations;

WHEREAS these weapons have been used by deranged individuals to kill and injure many innocent people, including school children;

AND WHEREAS the U.S. Congress has refused to enact a ban on these instruments, largely in response to pressure from the National Rifle Association and similar groups,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Lewiston Democratic Committee asks state legislators, members of Congress, the governor, the president and candidates for these offices to support a ban on military-grade weapons.

Presented by Chris Beam, 9 No Name Pond Road, Lewiston, ME 04240

Resolution to oppose resolution wherein the LCDC asks legislators and those running for office to oppose the bill to give General Dynamics $60 million:

Resolution presented to the Lewiston Democratic Committee, March 14, 2018

WHEREAS L.D. 1781, An Act to Encourage New Major Investments in Shipbuilding Facilities and the Preservation of Jobs, will soon be voted on by Maine State Legislature;

WHEREAS the bill proposes a 20-year $60 million tax waver for the Bath Iron Works, which is owned by General Dynamics Corporation;

WHEREAS General Dynamics is a multi-billion dollar corporation, which will soon benefit from a substantial cut in its corporate taxes;

WHEREAS General Dynamics obtains a large share of its profits from military contracts, which are paid for by Maine citizens;

WHEREAS General Dynamics may soon benefit from large proposed increases in the U.S. defense budge;

WHEREAS the tax waiver will deprive the state of badly needed revenues for such needs as education, health care and infrastructure upkeep;

AND WHEREAS the president of the General Dynamics earns an estimated annual salary of $21 million, and will also benefit from a substantial income tax cut for high earners,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Lewiston Democratic Committee asks state legislators, the governor, and candidates for these offices to oppose this bill.
